Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei will be buried on July 9, according to state television reports.
The report states that funeral proceedings will begin on July 4 in Tehran before moving across several cities, including Qom and Mashhad. The final burial is scheduled to take place at the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad, one of the holiest sites in Shia Islam.
Channels Television reports that Khamenei died following an assassination during US-Israeli airstrikes on February 28, 2026, with Iranian authorities confirming his death on March 1. His funeral had previously been postponed several times.
Iranian officials are expecting large-scale participation across the ceremonies, with projections of up to 20 million people attending events nationwide. A period of national mourning has also been declared.
Iran has outlined a multi-city funeral procession spanning Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad, with each stage expected to last at least 24 hours.
Khamenei led Iran for 37 years after becoming Supreme Leader in 1989 following the death of Ayatollah Khomeini.
