The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi as the running mate to its presidential candidate, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, for the 2027 general election.
The party said the decision followed extensive consultations with leaders, coalition partners, youth and women stakeholders, and representatives across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.
In the statement, ADC’s National Leadership described Amaechi’s nomination as the outcome of its presidential primaries, where he reportedly emerged as runner-up, gaining broad support within the party.
The party added that the Atiku-Amaechi pairing represents a political alliance aimed at addressing national challenges and strengthening governance capacity.
It highlighted Amaechi’s record in public service, noting his tenure as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term governor of Rivers State, and later Minister of Transportation, where he oversaw major rail and transport projects.
According to ADC, the combination of Atiku Abubakar’s national political experience and Amaechi’s governance background forms a “national ticket” intended to bridge regional and generational divides.
The party further stated that the alliance is expected to strengthen its coalition ahead of the 2027 elections and present what it described as a structured leadership option for Nigeria.
ADC called on members, civil society groups, youth organisations, and other stakeholders to support the coalition as it prepares for the polls.
