Spain were held to a 0-0 draw by World Cup debutants Cabo Verde in their opening Group H match
The European side, Spain, dominated possession in Atlanta but failed to convert chances against a disciplined Cabo Verde defence.
Lamine Yamal began the match on the bench as he eased back from injury, while his second-half introduction lifted Spain’s attacking intensity. However, the breakthrough never came.
Ferran Torres came closest in the first half when his effort struck the crossbar, while Cabo Verde goalkeeper Vozinha made several key saves to deny Spain before the break.
Despite increased pressure after half-time and further substitutions, Spain struggled to break down a compact defensive structure. Cabo Verde also threatened late on, nearly scoring in the final minute through a headed effort that forced a save from Unai Simón.
The result marks a strong debut performance for Cabo Verde on football’s biggest stage, while Spain will look to respond in their next Group H fixture.
