Nigeria’s Flying Eagles will begin the defence of their WAFU B U-20 Championship title with a high-profile clash against long-time rivals Ghana on Monday in Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast.
The opening Group B fixture is a repeat of the 2024 final, where Nigeria defeated Ghana’s Black Satellites 2-1 at the Stade de Kégué in Lomé, Togo, to successfully retain the regional title.
The Flying Eagles, seven-time African champions, will also be aiming to make a winning start under new head coach Abdu Maikaba, who takes charge of the team for his first competitive match after succeeding Aliyu Zubairu.
Speaking ahead of the encounter, Maikaba said his side is focused on securing all three points.
> “We are going for an outright victory against Ghana because our objective is to retain the trophy and we have to start winning our matches from Day One,” he said.
The match will kick off at 3pm Nigerian time at the Lycée Scientifique de Yamoussoukro.
Nigeria head into the tournament in good spirits after defeating Athlétique Club de Zenuola 2-1 in a preparatory friendly last Thursday.
Victory over Ghana would significantly strengthen the Flying Eagles‘ hopes of reaching the semi-finals before facing Togo on July 30 and Burkina Faso on August 2 in their remaining Group B fixtures.
Hosts Ivory Coast are drawn in Group A alongside Benin Republic and Niger Republic.
