A devastating Kano rainstorm has claimed the lives of eight people and destroyed homes and property worth millions of naira in Bichi Local Government Area, prompting the Kano State House of Assembly to call for immediate government intervention.
According to Channels Television, the Assembly urged the state executive to provide urgent relief materials and humanitarian assistance to affected residents following the disaster, which struck several communities last Thursday.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Hon. Lawan Shehu during plenary presided over by Speaker Jibril Falgore.
Presenting the motion, Shehu said the rainstorm left widespread destruction across Bichi communities. He added that he visited the affected areas with the chairman of Bichi Local Government to assess the damage and sympathise with victims.
The lawmaker disclosed that the member representing Bichi Federal Constituency donated ₦2 million to each bereaved family, while victims who lost both relatives and property received ₦10 million in intervention support.
Shehu appealed to Governor Abba Yusuf’s administration to provide emergency relief materials and other forms of assistance to ease the suffering of those affected.
Following deliberations, lawmakers unanimously adopted the motion and called on the state government to expedite relief efforts.
In a separate resolution, the Assembly urged the government to establish two modern skills acquisition centres in Tudun Fulani and Zango wards of Ungogo Local Government Area to equip young people with vocational and entrepreneurial skills.
The motion’s sponsor, Saad Aminu, said the centres would help tackle unemployment among the area’s growing youth population. He noted that the proposal gained urgency after the recent arrest of more than 20 youths suspected of kidnapping, many of whom reportedly lacked formal education. The centres are also expected to serve youths from neighbouring Minjibir, Dala and Fagge local government areas.
The Assembly also approved motions seeking the upgrade of Sabon Bakin Zuwa Hospital in Jakara, Kano Municipal, and the rehabilitation of roads in Makoda, Dawakin Kudu and Warawa local government areas.
