Thousands of migrants crossed from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta overnight after breaching border barriers, according to a police source cited by Channels Television.

The large-scale crossing prompted a significant security response from Moroccan and Spanish authorities as officers worked to regain control of the border area.

The police source said many of the migrants managed to enter Ceuta, one of Spain’s two enclaves in North Africa, which has long served as a key entry point into the European Union for migrants seeking a route into Europe.

Authorities have not yet released an official breakdown of the number of people who crossed or disclosed whether there were injuries or arrests during the incident.

Ceuta and the nearby enclave of Melilla have repeatedly witnessed attempts by migrants to cross into Europe, often triggering diplomatic and humanitarian concerns over migration management and border security.

The latest incident is expected to renew discussions between Spain and Morocco on efforts to curb irregular migration while addressing the humanitarian challenges facing migrants.
