The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has directed lawyers, court officials and litigation staff to stop using the title “Barrister” as a prefix to their names in all official engagements at the Supreme Court.
The directive, contained in a memorandum dated July 13, 2026, was signed by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Kabir Akanbi, and takes immediate effect.
According to the circular, the use of “Barrister” before names is considered inappropriate and inconsistent with the level of professionalism expected at Nigeria’s apex court.
The memo instructed all litigation staff, legal practitioners, court registrars and lawyers to discontinue the title in official correspondence, records, documents, identity materials and every other official engagement linked to the Supreme Court.
To ensure compliance, the Chief Justice also directed Heads of Departments and Unit Heads to enforce the order among officers under their supervision.
The development follows a recent warning by the Council of Legal Education, which cautioned prospective lawyers against wearing legal wigs and gowns or presenting themselves as qualified legal practitioners before being formally called to the Nigerian Bar.
The council stressed that legal regalia and the privileges of legal practice are reserved exclusively for duly qualified practitioners under the Rules of Professional Conduct.
