The United States and Nigeria have begun a fresh round of high-level security talks in Washington, focusing on counterterrorism efforts and other security priorities.
The US-Nigeria joint working group is meeting in Washington, DC, with National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu leading the Nigerian delegation. Allison Hooker, US under-secretary of state, is heading the American team.
Nigeria’s delegation includes Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Defence Minister Christopher Musa and Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
According to TheCable, the agenda includes counterterrorism measures, progress made so far and the next steps for cooperation between the two countries.
A separate bilateral defence meeting between US and Nigerian officials is expected on Thursday.
The working group was established after US President Donald Trump redesignated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” (CPC).
The two countries previously held the group’s inaugural meeting in Abuja in January.
Washington and Abuja have also reaffirmed their commitment to religious freedom and said they would take sustained joint measures to promote and protect freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and freedom of religion or belief in Nigeria.
