The price of petrol has risen to as high as ₦1,350 per litre in parts of Abuja, following a series of increases in the gantry price by the Dangote Refinery within the past week.

Checks by the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday showed that filling stations across the Federal Capital Territory had adjusted their pump prices upwards.

Eterna sold petrol at ₦1,320 per litre, Gegu Oil at ₦1,310, while Salbas Oil sold at ₦1,330. Nipco and AY Shafa were selling at ₦1,350 per litre, while TotalEnergies sold at ₦1,280.

The latest increases followed successive adjustments in the Dangote Refinery’s gantry price, which moved from ₦1,165 to ₦1,185, then ₦1,200 and ₦1,265 per litre within one week.

The development has raised concerns among motorists, with some saying the higher fuel costs are adding to the pressure on household budgets.

A motorist in Gwarinpa, Olusegun Abbas, said he purchased petrol at ₦1,320 per litre, while another motorist in Dutse, Adewale Salau, bought the product at Gegu filling station for ₦1,310.

Salau described the situation as unbearable and said rising fuel prices were contributing to higher living costs.

“We urge the Federal Government to urgently intervene by stabilising fuel prices,” he said.

Another motorist in Kubwa, Stanley Okezie, said petrol was selling for ₦1,350 per litre in his area.

He warned that further increases could push up food prices as traders pass higher transportation costs on to consumers.

Development expert Aliyu Ilias also expressed concern over the economic impact of the price increases and called for measures to make petrol more affordable.

Meanwhile, the National Publicity Secretary of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Chinedu Ukadike, attributed the latest increase to the successive adjustments by the refinery.

Ukadike said marketers could not continue selling petrol below the replacement cost, adding that frequent price changes were creating uncertainty for both marketers and consumers.

Vice President Kashim Shettima speaking at an event in Ilorin, Kwara State

2023 election: Only six Northern governors supported Tinubu, Shettima says

Vice President Kashim Shettima has said only six of the 19 northern governors supported President Bola Tinubu’s presidential ambition during the 2023 election.   Shettima made the disclosure at the palace of the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, during the turbaning of Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq as the Sardauna of Ilorin Emirate. According to the Vice President, the political tension surrounding the 2023 presidential campaign and election was intense, but Tinubu remained determined to pursue his ambition. “You all know that we have 19 states in the North; out of these, only six actually believed and supported Tinubu, but Tinubu refused to be deterred,” Shettima said. He added that several obstacles were placed in Tinubu’s way, including opposition linked to former President Muhammadu Buhari. Shettima recalled the slogan, “Baba bayan sushi,” which he said reflected opposition to Tinubu’s candidacy at the time. Despite the political resistance, the Vice President said Tinubu continued with his presidential bid and eventually secured victory in the 2023 election. Shettima also urged politicians to reconcile after political contests, saying politics should not be treated as a “game of death”. He said Tinubu had embraced and forgiven northern governors who did not support him during the 2023 election, describing this as a demonstration of leadership. The Vice President subsequently urged politicians in Kwara State to close ranks after the All Progressives Congress primaries and emulate what he described as Tinubu’s accommodating approach to political differences. Shettima also spoke about the economic challenges inherited by the Tinubu administration, stating that the Federal Government inherited $3.9 billion in the kitty. He said the administration’s economic team nevertheless continued with its efforts to turn the economy around. The Vice President had earlier inaugurated the state’s Revenue House on Ahmadu Bello Way and a garment factory in Ilorin.
