Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso has urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race, citing his age and health.
Kwankwaso made the call while receiving members of the Fulani Farmers Association at his Abuja residence, according to PUNCH.
He urged Atiku, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, to focus instead on his traditional responsibilities as the Wazirin Adamawa.
“Go to the Wazirin of Adamawa’s house and tell him in Fulani that he needs to focus on his traditional title of Wazirin, given his age and health,” Kwankwaso said.
The former governor also appealed to Atiku’s supporters to persuade him to step aside from the presidential contest.
Kwankwaso said that if he succeeds in his own political bid, he would ensure Atiku is well taken care of, particularly because of his ties to Adamawa State.
The comments come amid ongoing efforts to unite opposition political forces ahead of the 2027 presidential election and challenge President Bola Tinubu.
Atiku, who has contested the presidency several times, including in 2007, 2011, 2019 and 2023, said in April that the 2027 election could be his final attempt.
The former vice has continued to campaign for restructuring, economic liberalisation and private sector-led growth.
