Senate postpones Security Summit following NAF crash

The Nigerian Senate has postponed its two-day National Security Summit scheduled for October 12 and 13, 2026, following the fatal Nigerian Air Force aircraft crash in Igbokoda, Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State.   The summit has been deferred indefinitely in honour of the victims of the crash, which occurred on Monday and involved a Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft. In a statement on Tuesday, Senate Leader and Chairman of the Ad-hoc Committee on the National Security Summit, Opeyemi Bamidele, said preparations for the summit had been completed following the conclusion of zonal public hearings. He said the crash and the subsequent declaration of national mourning by President Bola Tinubu necessitated the postponement. President Tinubu declared three days of national mourning in honour of the victims and directed that Nigerian flags be flown at half-mast nationwide. “With the declaration of national mourning, the Senate resolved that the national security summit should be deferred till further notice in honour of the victims of the crash,” Bamidele said. The Senate also expressed condolences to President Tinubu, the Nigerian Armed Forces, particularly the Nigerian Air Force, and the families of the officers and crew members who died in the crash. It said a new date for the security summit would be announced in due course, while appealing to stakeholders to bear with the Senate during the period of national mourning. The aircraft crashed near a naval base in Igbokoda. The ATR-42 is a twin-engine turboprop aircraft capable of carrying between 30 and 50 passengers.
