Prominent northern political leaders have declared support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, launching a political movement to mobilise voters across Northern Nigeria.
The group, known as Arewa For Asiwaju, announced its formation after a courtesy visit to Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
According to Channels Television, the delegation comprised political stakeholders from the North-West, North-Central and North-East geopolitical zones.
Speaking on behalf of the group, former Kano State Governor and former Minister of Education, Ibrahim Shekarau, said the movement was established to promote Tinubu’s re-election and counter claims that his administration had neglected Northern Nigeria.
Shekarau described the organisation as a coalition of prominent northern figures with several directorates responsible for coordinating campaign activities and public enlightenment ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
He said the group intended to challenge what it considered misleading narratives about the Federal Government’s performance in the region.
The former governor also explained that the delegation visited Shettima because the Vice President was an integral part of the presidential ticket.
According to Shekarau, the group briefed Shettima on its structure and objectives, adding that the Vice President welcomed the initiative and pledged his support.
Prominent Political Figures Join Movement
Among the members identified as part of the movement are former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, former Jigawa State Governor and ex-Minister of Defence Abubakar Badaru, former Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong, and former Bauchi State Governor Isah Yuguda.
The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Brigadier General Buba Marwa, was also listed among the members.
The launch of Arewa For Asiwaju represents an effort by supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress to strengthen Tinubu’s political support base in Northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general election.
Tinubu is seeking another presidential term, with political groups and parties already positioning themselves for the forthcoming electoral contest.
