The Lagos State Government will begin full enforcement of a ban on single-use plastics (SUPs) starting July 1, 2025.

Lagos State Commissioner for Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, made the announcement via his official X account on Monday.

Wahab said the policy follows an 18-month strategic engagement with stakeholders, including manufacturers and marketers.

“From July 1, 2025, @followlasg will commence full enforcement of the ban on Single Use Plastics (SUPs). We’ve been intentional and strategic with 18 months of dialogue, engagement and transition. Now, it’s time to act,” Wahab disclosed.

“The State has been very strategic and intentional about the ban of Single Use Plastics (SUPs). Within the space of almost 18 months, we have had series of stakeholders’ engagements with marketers and producers of these products.”

During a recent meeting with Tetra Pak West Africa, led by Managing Director Haithem Debbiche, Wahab reiterated the government’s commitment to the ban.

Wahab noted the need for “environmental responsibility” and the adoption of global best practices, adding that “What is unacceptable elsewhere cannot become standard in Lagos. We must protect our future and do what is right for the greater good.”

He also pointed to the recent enforcement of the state’s ban on Styrofoam as evidence that Lagos is capable of implementing effective environmental policy.

“We’re not here to score points. We’re here to do the work. Just like with the successful enforcement of the styrofoam ban, we will insist on accountability and responsibility.”
