Liverpool FC has announced that the club’s jersey number 20 will be retired in honour of Diogo Jota, who died in a car accident early this month.

The club confirmed the retirement of the squad number on Friday.

Jota was a winger for Liverpool and wore jersey number 20 before his death.

Liverpool said the number will be retired and not be worn by any other person “across all levels, including LFC Women and academy”.

“The move is recognition of not only the immeasurable contribution our lad from Portugal made to the Reds’ on-pitch successes over the last five years, but also the profound personal impact he had on his teammates, colleagues and supporters and the everlasting connections he built with them,” the statement reads.

Jota and Andre, his brother, died on July 3 after the Lamborghini he was in veered off the road and caught fire in the province of Zamora in Spain.

They were travelling by car from Porto to take a boat from Santander in northern Spain to Plymouth and Portsmouth in the south of England.

Reportedly, Jota was on his way to take a ferry to England for Liverpool’s pre-season training when the accident happened.

He wanted to travel by sea after doctors had advised him against flying, following a minor surgical procedure.

The fatal crash comes less than two weeks after Jota’s wedding to Rute Cardoso on June 22, 2025. The couple had been engaged since 2022. They had three kids together.
