Seventeen persons reportedly died in Tuesday’s accident on the Enugu-Nsukka Expressway, Enugu State.

According to a statement by the police command’s spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, the accident happened about 5.20pm on April 30, at Ekwegbe, on the Enugu/Opi/Nsukka Road. The victims were burnt beyond recognition.

Ndukwe said the accident involved an 18-seater Hummer bus (DAS 215 XA), which was inscribed with ‘Masha Allah’. The driver was heading to Nsukka from the Enugu axis of the road, and on top speed.

The vehicle’s take-off point and destination could not be ascertained. It was loaded with edibles, he added. It was however gathered that the bus was travelling to the North. The police have also recovered luggage of the victims.

The police added that the driver lost control and plunged into the fence of Maduka University along the road. The bus then burst into flames.

Two other passengers were however rescued alive and taken to the hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has visited the scene with officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). He described the accident as sad, and commiserated with the yet-to-be-traced bereaved families, friends and associates of the deceased.

Uzuegbu called on residents to come up with information that could help in identifying the victims or trace their relatives.
