Victims rescued from the deadly Woro community attack in Kwara State have arrived in Ilorin after spending several months in captivity, following a major security operation involving the military and other security agencies.

According to Channels Television, the victims arrived in the Kwara State capital late on Thursday after being transported from Niger State. They were received at the Nigerian Army’s 2 Division, Sobi Barracks, before being moved to an undisclosed location where they spent the night.

Some of the rescued victims were taken to hospital for medical treatment, while authorities begin the process of providing medical care, psychological support and other welfare services after their prolonged ordeal.

The abductees were among residents kidnapped earlier this year when armed attackers invaded Woro in Kaiama Local Government Area, killing scores of people and taking many others into the surrounding forests. The attack prompted intensified security operations aimed at locating and rescuing those held captive.

The rescued victims are expected to be formally handed over to Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who has been working with security agencies to secure their release.

Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu welcomed the successful rescue of 308 abducted Nigerians, comprising 163 victims from Woro in Kwara State and 145 victims from Niger State. The victims were rescued from a location within the Kainji Lake National Park forest.

Onanuga described the operation as the largest rescue mission carried out in a single day, involving the National Counter-Terrorism Centre, the Nigerian military, the Department of State Services, intelligence agencies and the police.

The Woro attack took place in February after terrorists reportedly retaliated against villagers who failed to attend a gathering they had announced. The attackers burned homes, killed more than 150 people according to residents, and abducted many others, although casualty figures have varied between local accounts and official reports.

President Tinubu condemned the attack at the time, describing it as “beastly”, and ordered increased military deployment to the affected area.
