Unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk has tipped Anthony Joshua to defeat Tyson Fury, revealing he has been actively helping his former rival prepare for a potential all-British showdown later this year.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Usyk said Joshua’s recent improvements in training and mindset give him the edge over Fury, despite acknowledging the latter’s danger and pedigree.
“I look how Anthony works and how he has changed,” Usyk said. “In my opinion, AJ wins against Fury.”
Training alliance raises eyebrows
Joshua, 36, is currently preparing for his return to the ring against Kristian Prenga on 25 July in Riyadh. The fight is widely seen as a warm-up ahead of a long-anticipated clash with Fury.
In a surprising twist, Joshua has been training alongside Usyk in Spain and Ukraine. The Ukrainian, who has beaten both Joshua and Fury twice, said their sessions have focused on tactics, technical skills, and mental preparation.
“We speak about strategy, boxing skills and psychology,” Usyk explained. “I say, ‘champ, come on, don’t stop’.”
“Official sparring” before bigger test
Usyk dismissed concerns over Joshua’s upcoming opponent, describing the bout with Prenga as “official sparring” and unlikely to pose serious problems.
Instead, the focus remains firmly on Fury, with Usyk openly rooting for AJ despite his friendship with the Gypsy King.
“I like Fury… he’s an amazing fighter,” Usyk said. “But I want Anthony to win – he deserves it.”
Personal struggles and motivation
Joshua’s last outing was a routine win over Jake Paul in December. However, he has since taken time away following a tragic car accident that claimed the lives of two friends.
Usyk, who has endured personal loss amid the war in Ukraine, said he relates to Joshua’s situation and has encouraged him to stay focused.
“God gave you one more chance. Take this chance and don’t stop,” Usyk recalled telling him.
The Ukrainian added that resilience and faith have been key in his own journey, a mindset he is now passing on as AJ eyes one of the biggest fights in British boxing history.
