Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force in Delta State have killed a suspected kidnapper during a gun battle in Ughelli North Local Government Area.

According to a report by Guardian NG, the operation was carried out by the Commissioner of Police Special Assignment Team following intelligence on kidnapping activities around the Upper Agbarho axis.

Police spokesperson Bright Edafe said officers arrested two suspects in separate operations in Rivers and Imo states before they led operatives to a forest between Upper Agbarho and Oviri-Ogor communities where weapons were hidden.

Edafe said the police team came under attack from other gang members who attempted to rescue the arrested suspects, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire.

He disclosed that some of the suspects sustained gunshot injuries during the confrontation, while two police officers were also wounded and are receiving treatment.

According to the police, the injured suspects later died at the hospital.

Items recovered from the operation included an AK-47 rifle, magazines, live ammunition, a pump-action gun and a locally made pistol. Police said efforts are ongoing to arrest other fleeing members of the gang.
