The Ebonyi State Police Command has launched a full investigation into the death of medical professional Mary Habila, who was found dead while on official duty during a visit by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, to his hometown in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area.

According to Channels Television, Habila was part of a medical team accompanying the minister when she was reportedly discovered dead within Umahi’s residential compound.

Police spokesperson SP Joshua Ukandu said the command considers a post-mortem examination crucial to scientifically determine the cause of death and ensure a transparent investigation. However, he disclosed that Habila’s family has formally objected to an autopsy.

Despite the family’s position, the police said they intend to engage a qualified forensic pathologist but are awaiting the arrival of the deceased’s family or an authorised representative, whose presence is required before the examination can proceed.

Ukandu explained that the Ohaozara Divisional Police Officer received a distress call on June 27, 2026, about a medical emergency involving Habila. On arriving at the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital, Uburu, hospital authorities confirmed that she had been brought in dead.

The Commissioner of Police subsequently directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a detailed investigation. Detectives have since examined the scene and obtained statements from key witnesses and other relevant persons.

The police assured the public that the investigation would be thorough, transparent and impartial, with further updates to be provided as new findings emerge.

Meanwhile, Minister of Works David Umahi has also called for a comprehensive forensic investigation into Habila’s death. Through his legal counsel, he wrote to the Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police requesting that an autopsy be conducted before the deceased is buried.

According to the minister, a forensic examination is necessary to establish the true cause and circumstances of Habila’s death, dispel speculation and ensure justice for all parties.

In the letter dated July 15, 2026, Umahi urged the Nigeria Police Force to engage qualified forensic pathologists to carry out an independent autopsy, stating that the exercise would preserve the integrity of the investigation and conclusively determine the cause of death before burial.
