Spain have become the first country in football history to simultaneously hold the FIFA Men’s World Cup and FIFA Women’s World Cup titles after defeating Argentina 1-0 in the 2026 World Cup final.
FIFA confirmed the historic achievement in a post on its official X account on Sunday, celebrating Spain as the first nation to reign as champions of both global tournaments at the same time.
The milestone follows Spain’s triumph in the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup, three years after the country’s women’s team won the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup by defeating England 1-0 in Sydney, with Olga Carmona scoring the decisive goal.
The latest victory also secured Spain’s second men’s World Cup title, adding to its maiden success at the 2010 tournament in South Africa.
By lifting the trophy in New York while remaining the reigning women’s world champions, Spain achieved a feat unmatched since the men’s and women’s FIFA World Cups were established.
The achievement further underlines Spain’s dominance in international football in recent years. The men’s team also won the UEFA Euro 2024 title, while the women’s side has remained among the world’s leading teams since claiming its first World Cup crown in Australia and New Zealand.
