Samsung has launched a new generation of premium foldable smartphones with higher price tags, citing rising artificial intelligence-driven component costs as it seeks to maintain its lead in the fast-growing foldable device market.
The South Korean technology giant unveiled the devices in London on Wednesday, introducing the Galaxy Z Fold8, Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip8, according to Channels Television, which cited AFP.
Leading the line-up is the Galaxy Z Fold8, which unfolds into a 7.6-inch display with a 4:3 aspect ratio designed for video viewing. At just 4.5mm thick when opened, the device starts at $1,900.
Samsung also introduced the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, its flagship foldable model, priced from $2,100. The device measures only 4.1mm thick and weighs 215 grammes, making it one of the company’s slimmest foldables to date.
For users seeking a more compact option, the Galaxy Z Flip8 starts at $1,200 and is aimed at consumers who prioritise portability and social media use.
Samsung’s mobile division head, TM Roh, said the company was once again pushing the boundaries of premium mobile technology.
“By setting a new standard for foldables, we are once again advancing the premium mobile experience,” Roh said.
Industry analysts said the launch reinforces Samsung’s leadership in the foldable smartphone segment, a market it pioneered in 2019.
PP Foresight analyst Paolo Pescatore described the Galaxy Z Fold8 as the standout product of the launch, saying it demonstrates Samsung’s determination to expand the foldable market with devices tailored to different users.
Attention is also turning to Apple, which is widely expected to reveal its first foldable iPhone during its September product event.
Samsung said the higher prices reflect increasing costs of memory chips, which have surged because of growing demand for artificial intelligence technologies. Apple recently cited similar cost pressures when raising prices for some Mac and iPad models.
IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo said Apple is expected to help bring foldable smartphones into the mainstream, increasing pressure on Samsung to continue innovating.
The new devices underline intensifying competition in the premium smartphone market as manufacturers invest heavily in AI-powered hardware and software capabilities.
