The Kano State Government has announced plans to establish a state-owned commercial airline as part of efforts to create employment opportunities for indigenes who have completed professional pilot training.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf unveiled the proposal during the 40th Executive Council Meeting at the Government House in Kano, where he received several awards, including a recognition from the Kano State Pilot Association for supporting members to complete their aviation training.

According to a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the proposed Kano Airline is expected to begin operations within the next year.

Yusuf said the state government would provide the necessary support to ensure the successful establishment and operation of the airline, noting that the initiative is aimed at creating jobs for trained pilots and strengthening the state’s aviation sector.

The governor also expressed satisfaction with the performance of Kano-sponsored pilots who underwent training in Jordan under a programme initiated by a previous administration.

Speaking earlier, Chairman of the Kano State Pilot Association, Naziru Ibrahim, praised Yusuf for facilitating the revalidation of members’ flying licences. He appealed to the governor to assist the pilots in securing their final certifications, which would enable them to operate commercial flights within Nigeria and internationally.

The announcement comes as Kano continues to invest in initiatives aimed at expanding employment opportunities and developing key sectors of the state’s economy.
