The Federal Ministry of Education has released the final ranked and approved list of textbooks authorised for use in Nigerian schools from 2026 to 2028.
According to PUNCH, the ministry announced the release in a statement issued on Monday by its Director of Press and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo, after completing the first phase of the national textbook ranking exercise.
The first phase covers textbooks for Primary 1, Primary 4, Junior Secondary School 1 and Senior Secondary School 1.
Each approved textbook has been assigned a unique Ranking/QR Tracking Code, alongside details including the title, author or authors, publisher and year of publication. The ministry said the system would make it easier to identify, monitor and account for approved instructional materials.
The exercise was conducted under the guidance of the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, with the final list approved by Alausa.
The ministry said the introduction of the tracking codes was aimed at improving transparency in the selection, procurement and use of textbooks in schools.
It also explained that generating and assigning the unique codes contributed to the time required to complete and validate the final lists.
Second phase to cover four class levels
The textbook ranking exercise will be implemented in phases. The ministry said preparations would now begin for the second phase, covering Primary 2, Primary 5, JSS 2 and SS 2.
The same identification and tracking measures will be applied to textbooks approved under the second phase.
The ministry urged publishers, schools, education authorities, procurement agencies and other stakeholders to consult the approved list when selecting and procuring textbooks for the affected classes.
It said the exercise formed part of the Federal Government’s efforts to ensure that teachers and learners have access to quality, relevant and curriculum-aligned instructional materials while improving transparency and accountability in textbook provision.
The complete 2026–2028 approved textbook list, including the Ranking/QR Tracking Code for each title, has been made available by the Federal Ministry of Education.
