Hundreds of residents have been displaced after a devastating Katsina windstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall destroyed more than 200 homes, shops and other property worth millions of naira in Dangamau community, Kusada Local Government Area of Katsina State.

According to Channels Television, the disaster struck during the week, leaving many families homeless and disrupting economic activities across the community.

Governor Dikko Radda expressed sympathy with the victims, describing the destruction as painful and unfortunate. He said the loss of homes and valuable property had imposed severe hardship on affected families and assured residents that the state government would provide immediate assistance.

“On behalf of the Government and the good people of Katsina State, I commiserate with the victims of this disaster in Dangamau. We feel your pain and we will not leave you alone at this time,” the governor said.

Radda directed relevant government agencies to assess the extent of the damage and begin emergency intervention efforts. He added that relief materials, food, shelter and other essential support would be provided to displaced households without delay.

The governor also urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with emergency response officials as authorities work to restore normalcy. In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Kaula Mohammed, Radda prayed for the safety of residents and protection against future disasters.

The incident is the latest in a series of weather-related disasters recorded in Katsina State during the current rainy season.

Just a week earlier, two brothers, 12-year-old Muhammad Salisu and seven-year-old Abdurrahman Salisu, died after floodwaters swept them away in Janbango community while they were returning from an Islamiyya school.

Residents blamed the recurring flooding on inadequate drainage infrastructure, saying runoff from several parts of Katsina Local Government Area converges on Janbango during heavy rainfall, causing severe flooding, erosion and destruction.

The Chairman of the Janbango Community Development Association, Malam Tajuddeen, renewed calls for the construction of proper drainage channels, saying repeated appeals to the government had yet to produce a lasting solution.

The affected communities are urging the Katsina State Government and relevant agencies to implement effective flood control and drainage projects to prevent further loss of lives and property during the rainy season.
