Governor Umaru Bago has flagged off the construction of the Phase One Permanent National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp in Niger State, describing the project as a major investment in youth development and national service.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Bago said the first phase of the project would be built on eight hectares of land, while an additional 20 hectares had been earmarked for agricultural activities to support the NYSC farming initiative. He assured that adequate funding had been provided and expressed confidence that the completed facility would rank among the best orientation camps in Nigeria.

The Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, said the project reflected the shared commitment of the Federal Government and the Niger State Government to youth development, national unity and sustainable progress. He noted that the permanent camp would improve the welfare, safety and morale of corps members while serving as a hub for youth empowerment and community development.

Nafiu commended Governor Bago for supporting the scheme and providing the resources needed for the project. He added that Niger had become the fourth state, after Lagos, Adamawa and Gombe, to begin constructing a modern permanent NYSC orientation camp. He also urged the contractor to maintain high construction standards and complete the project on schedule.

Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkin-Daji, pledged the Assembly’s support for the successful delivery of the project.

The contractor, Stephen Adigun, said the proposed camp would accommodate about 5,000 corps members, with room for future expansion. According to him, the facility will include 41 hostel blocks with 20 rooms each, accommodating six occupants per room, a 3,000-seat multipurpose hall, administrative offices, sports and recreational facilities, a clinic, a perimeter fence and other supporting infrastructure.

Adigun assured stakeholders that the project would be completed on schedule without compromising quality.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Social Development, Nuhu Ngaski, and the Emir of Agaie, Yusuf Nuhu, also praised the initiative and pledged continued support for programmes aimed at improving youth welfare and development.
