FCCPC, NERC, state regulators meet to strengthen consumer protection in power sector

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) on Thursday convened a high-level stakeholder engagement with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and State Electricity Regulatory Commissions (SERCs) to strengthen collaboration on power consumer protection across Nigeria’s electricity sector.

The meeting, held at the FCCPC headquarters, brought together the leadership of NERC and chairpersons of state electricity regulatory commissions to improve coordination between federal and state regulators following the decentralisation of electricity regulation.

According to Channels Television, discussions are centred on six priority areas: inter-agency collaboration, consumer complaint resolution, consumer education, investigations and enforcement, market surveillance, and information sharing.

The engagement comes as states assume greater responsibilities in electricity regulation after the 2023 constitutional amendment that devolved powers over the sector.

Officials said the forum is also addressing growing consumer concerns over estimated billing, inadequate metering, and poor service delivery, while clarifying the responsibilities of the FCCPC, NERC and state regulators to prevent regulatory overlap.

Further details from the meeting are expected as deliberations continue.
