The Kano State House of Assembly has passed the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board (Amendment) Bill, 2026, introducing new measures to regulate tuition and other charges imposed by private schools.
The legislation, passed during Monday’s plenary, followed the adoption of a report by the House Committee on Education after public hearings and consultations with key stakeholders, according to Channels Television.
A major provision of the amended law requires private and voluntary schools to obtain official approval before increasing tuition fees or other charges. The measure is aimed at protecting parents and guardians from arbitrary fee hikes by ensuring that proposed increases are subject to regulatory oversight.
The bill also creates the office of an Executive Secretary to strengthen the administration and management of the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board.
Speaker of the House, Ismail Falgore, praised lawmakers for their contributions throughout the legislative process, describing the amendment as an important step towards improving the regulation and administration of private and voluntary educational institutions across Kano State.
The amendment was finalised after extensive stakeholder engagement conducted by the House Committee on Education before its consideration and passage by the Assembly.
