Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States, Olga Stefanishyna, following a government reshuffle that had been widely anticipated.
The dismissal, announced by presidential decree on Monday, comes as Ukraine intensifies efforts to secure additional US-made Patriot air defence missile systems to help counter escalating Russian aerial attacks.
In a Facebook post, Stefanishyna said her departure was made at her own request and was “dictated by personal circumstances”. She described serving as Ukraine’s envoy to Washington as “the greatest honour” of her life.
She said her tenure helped strengthen military cooperation with the United States during a difficult political period.
> “We increased the supply of American weapons and maintained support precisely when the political climate in Washington was shifting against us,” she wrote.
Stefanishyna, who previously served as Ukraine’s deputy prime minister and justice minister, was appointed ambassador in July 2025. The Washington posting remains one of Kyiv’s most important diplomatic roles as Ukraine continues to rely heavily on US military assistance and intelligence support in its war with Russia.
Relations between President Zelensky and US President Donald Trump have experienced periods of tension. However, recent interactions between the two leaders have shown signs of improvement.
According to Ukrainian media, Stefanishyna is being investigated by the country’s anti-corruption agency over alleged wrongdoing, although she has not been formally charged.
Zelensky has yet to announce a successor to lead Ukraine’s embassy in Washington.
