Several prominent members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Nasarawa State have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring their support for Governor Abdullahi Sule.
According to Channels Television, the defectors were led by the immediate past PDP Vice Chairman for Nasarawa North, Shemmy Mashi, and were formally received by Governor Sule at the Government House.
Mashi, who said he had been a member of the PDP since 1999, explained that he and his supporters left the opposition party due to what they described as Governor Sule’s leadership and the development projects executed across the state.
Among those who joined him were former PDP youth leader Yahaya Jobe, former party elder from Karu, Akuson Philip, and former woman leader Christiana Ondah. Mashi said the delegation represented only a portion of those preparing to leave the PDP for the APC.
The defectors pledged their support to Governor Sule’s administration and thanked him for welcoming them into the ruling party.
Introducing the delegation, Nasarawa State Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Kwanta Yakubu, described the defections as part of a growing trend of opposition politicians joining the APC. He attributed the development to the administration’s infrastructure projects and inclusive style of governance.
Responding, Governor Sule welcomed the new members and noted that their visit followed recent defections by other former PDP leaders, including Hajiya Farida Umar and Mohammed Sani.
The governor said the increasing number of defections reflected growing confidence in his administration. He stressed that governance in Nasarawa State benefits all residents regardless of political affiliation.
Sule highlighted investments in roads, hospitals, schools and industries, as well as economic initiatives such as the “Diamond in the Rough” investment summit and the “Renaissance” summit, which he said were aimed at improving the state’s development.
He commended the defectors for joining the APC and assured them of his administration’s cooperation as it continues to pursue its development agenda.
