The Federal Government has launched a new digital platform that enables Nigerians to register births and deaths, apply for birth attestations, correct civil registration records and verify certificates online.

According to Punch, the platform was introduced by the National Population Commission (NPC) and announced by the National Orientation Agency (NOA) as part of efforts to digitise Nigeria’s civil registration services.

The new self-service portal is designed to reduce the long queues and paperwork previously associated with obtaining birth and death certificates, while allowing users to complete many services online.

The NOA said proper birth and death registration provides legal identity and improves access to healthcare, education, passports, financial services and other government programmes.

Birth certificate application

The NPC said birth registration for children under five years remains free at all of its registration centres nationwide. However, online self-service birth registration attracts a fee of ₦5,000.

To qualify for the online application:

The child must have been born in Nigeria.

The child must have a National Identification Number (NIN).

At least one parent must be a Nigerian citizen.

One parent must possess a valid birth certificate.

The commission also stated that the certificate can only be downloaded once after successful processing. Applicants requiring another copy must apply for a certificate reprint through the NPC portal. It added that all payments are non-refundable.

Death registration

The NPC said death registration remains free.

Applicants must provide the informant’s National Identification Number before proceeding. Where the deceased does not have a NIN, the applicant must state the reason for its absence.

Required information includes the deceased’s personal details, place of death, usual residence, occupation, date and cause of death, marital status, literacy level, and whether the death was certified by a medical doctor.

Applicants must also select the registration state, local government area and NPC registration centre. The commission said a confirmation email will be sent after successful registration.

The NPC advised Nigerians who need assistance to visit any of its registration centres nationwide.
