Two candidates claim NDC ticket for Anambra assembly seat

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) is facing a dispute over its candidate for Anaocha 1 Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly ahead of the 2027 election.

The controversy centres on the serving lawmaker for the constituency, Nkechi Ogbuefi, and another aspirant, Azubuike Okoye, who both have claims surrounding the party’s ticket.

Ogbuefi, the Deputy Minority Leader of the Anambra State House of Assembly, said on Tuesday that she participated in the NDC primary and was duly returned as the party’s candidate.

Speaking to journalists in Awka, she alleged that Okoye neither purchased the party’s nomination form nor participated in its screening or primary election.

Ogbuefi said the party had resolved to give serving lawmakers automatic tickets and that she received her nomination form before participating in the primary.

She also claimed that a Federal High Court proceeding in Abuja affirmed her as the winner of the party’s primary, adding that the NDC had told the court that Okoye’s name was never submitted as its candidate.

Okoye, however, declined to engage in a public dispute over the matter. He said the Independent National Electoral Commission would determine who the authentic candidate is when it publishes the list of candidates submitted by political parties.

“I cannot say anything now,” Okoye said, according to PUNCH. He added that it would make little sense for him to claim the ticket before INEC officially publishes the list.

The NDC Anambra State Chairman, Ikem Uzoezie, also declined to disclose the name submitted to INEC.

Uzoezie said INEC had already uploaded presidential and National Assembly candidates, while the names of candidates for the State House of Assembly would be published the following week.

He said the publication would clarify who the authentic NDC candidate for Anaocha 1 Constituency is.

Anaocha 1 is the constituency represented by Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi before his move to the NDC, according to PUNCH.

The dispute is therefore expected to remain unresolved until INEC publishes the official list of candidates for the 2027 Anambra State House of Assembly election.
