Rufai Hanga quits NDC, leaving the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) without representation in the Senate from northern Nigeria.

The senator representing Kano Central announced his resignation in a letter dated August 3, 2026, addressed to the NDC chairman of Najeria Ward in Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

Hanga, who also serves as the Senate’s deputy minority whip, said his resignation takes immediate effect following what he described as “careful reflection and personal deliberation.”

In the letter, he said he had decided to withdraw his membership of the party to pursue “other personal commitments and career paths.”

He thanked the ward executive committee and party members for their support during his time in the NDC, saying he valued the relationships and experiences gained through the party’s political activities.

The lawmaker also requested that his name be formally removed from the party’s ward register.

Hanga did not reveal his next political destination or indicate whether he plans to join another political party.

His departure leaves the NDC without a senator from northern Nigeria, marking a significant setback for the party’s representation in the region.

TheCable first reported Hanga’s resignation and published excerpts from his resignation letter.
