Manchester City began the post-Pep Guardiola era with a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Bournemouth as Enzo Maresca celebrated a winning Premier League debut at the Etihad Stadium.
According to Channels Television, Marcus Tavernier gave Bournemouth a surprise first-half lead before late goals from Marc Guehi and Josko Gvardiol completed City’s fightback on Sunday.
Bournemouth took control in the 26th minute when Evanilson’s cross found Tavernier, who calmly finished past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to put the visitors ahead.
City struggled to create clear chances for much of the match, with Erling Haaland missing a close-range opportunity and Bournemouth goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic denying several efforts.
Maresca, appointed as Guardiola’s successor, introduced Rayan Cherki in the second half, and the decision proved decisive. Cherki’s corner in the 84th minute allowed Guehi to head in the equaliser before the French playmaker provided the assist for Gvardiol’s stoppage-time winner.
The victory gave Maresca a positive start after Guardiola’s decade-long reign, during which City won six Premier League titles and 20 trophies.
However, City are undergoing significant changes, with several key players leaving the club and Maresca expected to strengthen the squad as he attempts to maintain the team’s dominance.
The result also offered relief after City’s disappointing 3-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Community Shield before the new Premier League season began.
