President Bola Tinubu has renewed the appointments of the Director-General of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Abdulhamid Dembos, and the Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Ali Mohammed Ali, for another three years.

The renewal of their appointments was announced by the President’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, in a statement issued on Sunday.

According to the statement, the second tenure of both media executives will begin on October 20, 2026, after the expiration of their initial three-year appointments.

Tinubu appointed Dembos and Ali to lead the NTA and NAN respectively on October 20, 2023.

Dembos, an indigene of Yola, Adamawa State, is a veteran broadcaster who previously served as National President of the Radio, Television, Theatre and Art Workers Union (RATTAWU). He also served as Executive Director of Marketing at the NTA before his appointment as Director-General.

He began his career with the NTA as an announcer at its Kaduna station in 1989 and later rose through the ranks, serving as General Manager of NTA Lokoja and NTA Kano before retiring as Acting Zonal Director of the NTA Kaduna Network Centre in 2017.

Ali Mohammed Ali, a journalist and media manager with over three decades of experience, holds degrees in English, International Affairs and Mass Communications from Nigerian institutions.

Onanuga said President Tinubu urged both executives to continue justifying the confidence placed in them by strengthening their organisations and supporting the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

China earthquake kills 16, injures 32 as 300 houses collapse

At least 16 people have been killed and 32 others injured after a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck China’s remote Tibet region, with more than 300 houses collapsing.   China’s state news agency, Xinhua, reported the casualties on Thursday, October 22, 2026, citing local authorities. The earthquake struck at 10:33 pm local time, causing widespread damage in the affected area. Officials were still assessing the destruction as emergency response and disaster relief operations continued. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake’s epicentre was in a mountainous area approximately 190 kilometres east-northeast of Nagqu and 390 kilometres north-east of Lhasa, the regional capital. The quake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, potentially increasing its impact on nearby communities. Buildings Damaged, Services Disrupted The epicentre was located in Maru township, Baqen County, in the Tibet region. Township deputy head Lhawang Dagpo told Xinhua that the earthquake was strongly felt at the township office, where cracks appeared in the walls. Power and telecommunications services were also disrupted in the county seat following the tremor. Authorities activated a Level-II earthquake disaster emergency response to coordinate relief efforts and address the situation. Officials continued to evaluate the damage as emergency teams worked in the affected communities. Tibet Has History of Deadly Earthquakes Earthquakes are relatively common in China, which has experienced several devastating seismic events over the years. In January 2025, at least 126 people were killed when an earthquake struck Tingri County in rural Tibet. The latest disaster has again raised concerns about the vulnerability of communities in the mountainous region to powerful earthquakes.
