Nigeria Football Federation President, Ibrahim Gusau, has resigned from office alongside members of the NFF Executive Committee.

Gusau announced his resignation during a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, August 27, 2026, according to a report by PUNCH Newspapers.

The development comes amid mounting concerns over the state of Nigerian football, following a series of setbacks involving the country’s senior national teams.

The Super Falcons recently failed to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after losing 2-1 to South Africa in the play-off. It marked the first time Nigeria’s women’s national team had failed to qualify for the tournament.

Before that setback, the Falcons were eliminated by Cameroon in the quarter-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The Super Eagles also missed out on qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The NFF has additionally faced scrutiny over the handling of a ₦17bn Federal Government intervention fund released in 2024.

A fact-finding committee had also alleged that some NFF board members and officials influenced national team invitations for financial gain.

Gusau’s resignation comes about a month before the NFF elective congress, which is scheduled to take place on September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

The Vice President subsequently urged politicians in Kwara State to close ranks after the All Progressives Congress primaries and emulate what he described as Tinubu’s accommodating approach to political differences. Shettima also spoke about the economic challenges inherited by the Tinubu administration, stating that the Federal Government inherited $3.9 billion in the kitty. He said the administration’s economic team nevertheless continued with its efforts to turn the economy around. The Vice President had earlier inaugurated the state’s Revenue House on Ahmadu Bello Way and a garment factory in Ilorin.
