A cyber attack has compromised the personal data of 8.7 million customers at three major UK airports, although airport operations and passenger safety were not affected.
The Manchester Airports Group (MAG), which operates Manchester, London Stansted and East Midlands airports, disclosed the incident on Thursday.
According to MAG, the attack occurred over the weekend and was discovered on Tuesday. The compromised information includes customers’ email addresses, phone numbers, vehicle registration details and postcodes.
The group said the breach involved data linked to car park, lounge and Fast Track bookings, as well as in-airport Wi-Fi registrations.
MAG attributed the incident to an “unauthorised third party” and said it had immediately contained the risk while working with specialist advisers to secure its systems and protect affected customers.
The airport operator stressed that the cyberattack did not disrupt flights or airport operations.
“At no point has passenger safety or aviation security been compromised,” MAG said, adding that bank and payment details were not affected.
The incident comes after Britain experienced a series of high-profile cyberattacks targeting major businesses, including Jaguar Land Rover, Marks & Spencer, Harrods and the Co-op food chain.
MAG said it was continuing to take appropriate measures in response to the breach.
