Gunmen have killed the All Progressives Congress chairman in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, Ishaq Yunusa, and abducted another person travelling with him.
The attack occurred on Thursday at about 5pm along the Itobe-Ochadamu Expressway, around Ojuwo Olijo in Ofu Local Government Area.
The Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Afusat Saliu, confirmed the incident in a statement made available to journalists in Lokoja on Friday.
According to the police, armed assailants emerged from the surrounding bush and opened fire on motorists. A blue Toyota Corolla with registration number GWA 636 CH was subsequently found abandoned along the highway.
Yunusa, who was identified as the driver, was found dead inside the vehicle, while another occupant was reportedly taken into the bush by the attackers.
The police said the command, working with other security agencies, had intensified operations in the area and was combing the surrounding forest in an effort to rescue the abducted victim and arrest the attackers.
Yunusa’s body was evacuated to Grimard Hospital, Anyigba, for an autopsy, while investigators continued to pursue leads linked to the attack.
The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, ordered sustained security operations along the affected corridor and directed the command to bring those responsible to justice.
The police also urged motorists and residents along the route to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements to security agencies.
The incident comes shortly after gunmen abducted National Youth Service Corps members in Kogi State. Police subsequently announced the rescue of 11 victims.
