National Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi has called for a peaceful campaign ahead of the 2027 general elections after youths blocked his convoy from travelling to Yelewata in Benue State.
Obi made the appeal on Tuesday while speaking to journalists in Makurdi, shortly after his convoy encountered a roadblock on the Makurdi-Gboko federal highway.
The youths, suspected to be supporters of one of the political parties, reportedly shut the road and prevented Obi from proceeding to Yelewata, where he had planned to meet families affected by the June 2025 attacks.
Obi arrived in Makurdi around 8am and was received at the Tactical Air Command Makurdi by NDC governorship candidate Professor Terhemba Shija and other party officials. His arrival was marked by celebrations and cultural performances.
However, his convoy reportedly encountered the blockade a short distance from the airport. The incident caused traffic congestion as the road was reportedly closed to other road users.
Describing the development as “very worrisome”, Obi said he chose not to confront the youths because doing so could have caused confusion and endangered lives.
He urged young Nigerians not to allow themselves to be used as instruments of violence by political elites.
Obi also appealed to the Inspector-General of Police and other security agencies to intervene and ensure political actors can move freely during the election season.
He said the situation was unacceptable and called on security authorities to provide adequate protection for citizens and political candidates.
The incident comes after a similar development in 2025, when the Benue State Government reportedly barred Obi from visiting internally displaced persons in the state without express approval.
