At least five people have died and 87 others remain unaccounted for after a ferry caught fire near a tourist hotspot in Palawan province, the Philippine Coast Guard said on Thursday.
Coast guard Captain Noemi Cayabyab said 42 people had been rescued, while five others were confirmed dead. She said the vessel’s manifest listed 134 passengers and crew.
“Based on the data we have right now on rescued (42) and the casualties (five), we still have 87 people who are unaccounted for,” Cayabyab told a local radio station.
Efforts to extinguish the blaze were still ongoing, according to the coast guard.
The incident occurred off Palawan, a popular tourist destination in the Philippines. The cause of the fire had not been disclosed in the report.
The figures were reported by Channels Television, citing the Agence France-Presse (AFP).
