The Department of State Services (DSS) will on Thursday, September 17, re-arraign five men accused of involvement in the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State.
The suspects are alleged to have links to Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina fi-Biladis Sudan, also known as Ansaru, a terrorist group.
The case relates to the May 15 abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, during which two victims were allegedly killed.
The five accused are Mahmud Muhammad, also known as Abu Bara’a and Abbas Mukhtar; Abubakar Abbas, also known as Isah Adam and Mallam Mahmuda Al-Nigeri; Abdulrazak Umar, also known as Abu Khalifa and Abu Khalid; Yunusa Musa, also known as Abu Yunusa Bin Musa; and Shamsu Adamu Sani, also known as Abu Itisar.
They are expected to face a six-count amended charge filed by the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo, on behalf of the Federal Government.
The re-arraignment, initially scheduled for Wednesday, September 16, was postponed after the first accused, Mahmud Muhammad, objected to being represented by counsel from the Legal Aid Council.
A Deputy Director of the Legal Aid Council, Akilaluyel Shettima, had announced his appearance for the five suspects. Muhammad, however, told Justice Salim Ibrahim that the accused had previously been represented by Bala Dakum and wanted him to continue as their lawyer.
The prosecution did not oppose the request, with Oyedepo acknowledging that the choice of legal representation is a constitutional matter.
Justice Ibrahim subsequently adjourned the matter to September 17 and ordered the accused to contact their lawyer and ensure his appearance in court.
The judge also directed the DSS to grant the suspects access to their lawyer to enable them to prepare their defence.
