Taraba nursing students protest hostel attacks, demand security

Students of the Taraba State College of Nursing and Midwifery, Jalingo, have protested alleged recurring attacks on their hostels, disrupting academic activities at the institution.

The protest followed reports of rape and assault allegedly carried out by suspected hoodlums who invaded students’ hostels at night.

The students blocked the institution’s main entrance and displayed placards with messages including, “The security of our lives matter” and “We are here to study, not to be killed.”

The protesters called on security agencies to increase patrols around the area and take proactive measures to protect students living outside the school premises.

They also alleged that the attackers stole valuables during the incidents.

The students appealed to the college management and the Taraba State Government to urgently address the security situation and protect students from further attacks.

According to Channels Television, Governor Agbu Kefas had in September 2025 directed the state Commissioner of Police to deploy security operatives to the area after meeting students who had raised concerns about their safety.

The students’ vulnerability has also been linked to the lack of accommodation within the institution, forcing both students and staff to live outside the school premises.

The latest protest comes as the students renew calls for urgent security measures to safeguard their lives and enable them to continue their studies without fear.

2027 election: Makinde welcomes APC defectors, predicts APM victory

Oyo State Governor and Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM) presidential candidate, Seyi Makinde, has expressed confidence that the party will secure victory in the 2027 general elections after receiving thousands of defectors from the All Progressives Congress (APC).   Makinde spoke on Monday at the Boye Nation/JAF Movement Mega Concert held at the Open Tennis Court of the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan. The defectors were led by Ajiboye Sangogade, popularly known as Boye Nation, a personal assistant and loyalist of former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu. They were drawn from several local government areas across Oyo State. Receiving the new members, Makinde said their defection reflected growing support for the APM and expressed confidence that the party would win across the board in 2027. The governor also addressed the APC governorship candidate in Oyo State, Sharafadeen Alli, urging him to focus on the APM governorship candidate, Bimbo Adekanmbi, rather than criticising his administration. Makinde also revisited his criticism of Alli’s legal career, contrasting his own engineering credentials with Adekanmbi’s accounting qualifications. On criticism over the use of diesel-powered generators for some streetlights in Oyo State, Makinde linked the situation to Nigeria’s wider electricity supply challenges. He argued that the generators would not have been necessary if the Federal Government had resolved the country’s power problems. The event, themed “Young, United, Unstoppable (YUU),” also featured performances by Fuji artistes and was attended by government officials, lawmakers, APM leaders and candidates. The development comes as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections. Makinde is seeking the presidency on the APM platform, while Adekanmbi is the party’s governorship candidate in Oyo State.
