Four teenage girls have died after a boat carrying eight passengers capsized at Dudduru Pond in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
The incident occurred at about 4pm on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, while the passengers were travelling from Kwadige Village to Chai Chai Sabuwa Market, according to the Jigawa State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
The NSCDC Public Relations Officer, ASC Badruddeen Tijjani, confirmed the incident in a statement made available to journalists in Dutse on Thursday.
He said preliminary information indicated that strong winds may have caused the boat to capsize while it was crossing the pond, located about three kilometres from Kwadige Village.
Four passengers, all female, died in the incident, while four others were rescued by farmers working around the pond.
The deceased were identified as Hasiya Mu’azu, 13; Hauwa Lawan, 13; Fatima Lawan, 12; and Dawsiyya Lawan, 13.
Tijjani said the bodies of the four victims were buried according to Islamic rites.
Residents of Kwadige and Kuna villages also assisted with the rescue and recovery efforts following the incident.
The State Commandant, CC Muhammad Kabiru Ingawa, commiserated with the families of the deceased and the Kwadige community.
The command urged boat operators and passengers to exercise caution when travelling on waterways, particularly during strong winds and other adverse weather conditions.
The NSCDC said it would continue sensitising communities on basic water safety measures to reduce the risk of similar incidents.
