CAF annuls Edo Queens’ WAFU-B final win, orders replay

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has annulled Edo Queens’ victory over Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa Ladies in the 2026 Women’s Champions League WAFU-B qualifying final and ordered the match to continue into extra time.

The decision followed an appeal by Ampem Darkoa Ladies over the failure to apply the competition rules after the teams played out a 2-2 draw in regulation time on September 5 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

Instead of playing extra time, the match went directly to a penalty shootout on the instruction of the game coordinator. Edo Queens won the shootout 4-1 and secured qualification for the Women’s Champions League main draw.

Ampem Darkoa protested the decision, while the Ghana Football Association subsequently lodged an official complaint with CAF.

CAF’s organising committee for women’s football ruled that the match officials failed to apply Article 72.4 of the competition regulations, which requires 30 minutes of extra time, split into two 15-minute periods, when a final remains level after 90 minutes.

Penalty kicks are only to be used if the scores remain level after extra time.

CAF also referenced Article 13.1, which provides that the technical criteria for the final tournament apply to zonal qualifying competitions.

Rather than ordering a complete replay, CAF directed the teams to resume the match from where it ended after 90 minutes, with 30 minutes of extra time to be played.

The replay will take place at the same venue in Ouagadougou, while the date and kick-off time will be announced by the WAFU-B executive committee.

The winner will claim the zone’s qualification place at the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League.

Edo Queens were Nigeria’s most recent representatives at the continental competition in 2024. Nigeria had no representative in the 2025 edition after Bayelsa Queens were eliminated by Ivory Coast’s ASEC Mimosas in the regional qualifier.
