President Bola Tinubu has declared three days of national mourning following the military aircraft crash in Igbokoda, Ondo State, which killed all 32 people on board.
The President also ordered that national flags be flown at half-mast across the country in honour of the victims and directed the Nigerian Air Force to investigate the cause of the crash.
According to Channels Television, the aircraft was carrying 25 passengers and seven crew members when it crashed shortly after 9:00am on Monday during a routine flight from Benin City to Lagos.
A military source confirmed that there were no survivors.
In a statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu expressed condolences to the victims’ families, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, and personnel of the Nigerian Air Force.
“This is a painful moment for our Armed Forces and for the entire nation,” Tinubu said, adding that the sacrifice of military personnel would not be forgotten.
The President commended the Nigerian Air Force for immediately activating search and rescue operations, as well as first responders and the Ondo State Government for their response at the crash site.
He also directed the Air Force to commence a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash, saying the findings should help prevent similar incidents in the future.
The aircraft, identified by Tinubu and Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo as an ATR-42, crashed near a naval base in Igbokoda, in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The Nigerian Air Force is expected to release the identities of those who died after their families have been formally notified.
