Nigeria’s Defence Minister, General Christopher Musa (retd.), has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the military aircraft crash in Ondo State that claimed the lives of several military personnel and civilians.
Musa described the incident as a tragic loss and said the investigation would establish the circumstances surrounding the crash while ensuring that operational safety protocols across Nigeria’s military aviation units are strengthened.
“A comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate crash has been ordered to ascertain the cause and ensure all necessary operational safety protocols are reinforced across our military aviation units,” Musa said in a statement issued on Monday.
The minister expressed condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Armed Forces, the families of the deceased and their colleagues.
He also extended his sympathies to the families of the civilians who were on board the aircraft.
The aircraft was reportedly on a routine mission from Benin City, Edo State, to Lagos when it crashed at Igbokoda in Ondo State shortly after 9:00am on Monday.
President Tinubu has declared three days of national mourning following the crash and directed that flags be flown at half-mast across the country in honour of the victims.
“This is a painful moment for our Armed Forces and for the entire nation. Our Air Force personnel put their lives on the line every day to secure Nigeria. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten,” Tinubu said in a statement issued by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga.
The Defence Minister prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and for strength for their families, the military community and Nigerians to bear the loss.
