Former United States President Barack Obama has accused President Donald Trump of targeting Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar over her political views, describing the investigation against her as a threat to American democracy.
In a post on X on Sunday, October 18, Obama criticised the Trump administration for allegedly using federal powers against an elected official because she had criticised the president.
“The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticise the president,” Obama said.
Obama Questions Investigation Into Ilhan Omar
Obama said Omar arrived in the United States with her father when she was 12 and became a naturalised citizen after her father obtained American citizenship when she was 17.
He criticised the Trump administration’s reported efforts to deport the Minnesota congresswoman over an allegation that she was 18 when her father became a US citizen and should have applied for citizenship independently.
The former president also questioned the search of Omar’s home by federal agents and the seizure of her phone and personal records.
He argued that the investigation raised concerns about the use of government institutions against political opponents.
Federal Agents Search Omar’s Home
On October 12, federal agents searched Omar’s home in Washington, DC, as part of a criminal investigation into possible fraud involving her immigration and naturalisation records.
Authorities reportedly seized her phone and passport and issued subpoenas to some of her relatives.
The investigation centres on allegations that Omar or members of her family provided false information during their immigration process decades ago.
Omar has denied the allegations and described the search as politically motivated.
The Somali-born congresswoman has been among Trump’s most vocal critics and has repeatedly faced attacks from the president over her background and political positions.
Obama Warns of Dangerous Precedent
Obama said the investigation reflected a broader pattern of the Trump administration using federal agencies to pursue people it considers political opponents.
He cited previous actions involving the New York attorney-general and a former Federal Bureau of Investigation director, arguing that similar cases had stalled or been dismissed for lacking a legal basis.
The former president warned that pursuing political opponents could establish a dangerous precedent that future administrations might also exploit.
He urged Americans to be concerned about the case regardless of their political views on Omar, noting that the investigation could distract her from her legislative responsibilities and force her to incur legal expenses.
Obama maintained that using government power to intimidate political critics should concern Americans across party lines.
