The Edo State Government has demolished buildings allegedly linked to ritual activities and cult-related crimes following the arrest of two suspects as part of its renewed crackdown on criminality.
The demolitions were carried out on Wednesday by the Edo State Special Security Squad, alongside the police and other security agencies.
According to PUNCH, the operation targeted a bungalow and four boys’ quarters at Uwalor-Oke in Uromi, Esan Central Senatorial District, allegedly used by a suspected ritualist, Ebhata Eromosele. A separate building linked to cult-related activities was also demolished in Ewatto.
The authorities alleged that Eromosele was involved in attacks on three young women, one of whom reportedly died. Another victim, who was hospitalised, has been discharged, while the third remains under treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, the coordinator of the Edo State Special Security Squad, Amiolemen Idemudia, said the government was determined to rid the state of criminal elements.
Idemudia alleged that Eromosele used the bungalow for ritual activities. He said security operatives recovered a bloodstained bedspread and other items suspected to be evidence of criminal activity during a search of the property.
He also claimed that a body found after a killing had been traced to the apartment.
The coordinator said Governor Monday Okpebholo had warned that his administration would not tolerate such crimes.
Second Building Demolished in Ewatto
Idemudia said another building, belonging to Bright Ejetuwamen, was demolished in Ewatto over alleged links to a cult-related crisis. He identified Ejetuwamen as a leading figure in the crisis and said the suspect had been apprehended.
He reiterated the state government’s position that properties allegedly used to facilitate criminal activities would be demolished.
Meanwhile, the zonal commander of the Edo State Security Corps, SP Johnson Oyameda (retd.), said Eromosele’s arrest followed more than a month of surveillance.
According to Oyameda, the investigation intensified after security operatives recovered a mutilated woman’s body from a drainage. Another similar incident was reported less than two weeks later.
He said operatives subsequently tracked Eromosele to the bungalow after suspecting his involvement in the incidents.
Oyameda alleged that Eromosele murdered a woman and dumped her body, adding that surveillance officers followed him to the apartment that was demolished on Wednesday.
He confirmed that the two suspects had been arrested and were being held by the Edo State Police Command for further investigation and prosecution.
The allegations against the suspects have not been established in court.
