Police fired tear gas to disperse activists and concerned Nigerians who gathered at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos on Tuesday to commemorate the sixth anniversary of the #EndSARS protests.
The incident disrupted the planned gathering, organised to honour those who lost their lives during the demonstrations against police brutality in October 2020.
According to Channels Television, tension flared as security operatives fired tear gas, forcing participants to flee the area.
Among those present at the commemoration were the Lagos State governorship candidates of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Funso Doherty, and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour.
Despite the disruption, activists vowed to continue demanding justice for victims of police brutality and reforms within the Nigeria Police Force.
The situation later calmed, with the area reportedly cleared.
Six Years After the #EndSARS Protests
The incident occurred six years after the nationwide #EndSARS demonstrations, which began in October 2020 as young Nigerians demanded an end to police brutality, particularly abuses linked to the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
The Lekki Toll Gate became a focal point of the protests. On October 20, 2020, soldiers opened fire on protesters at the location, triggering widespread outrage and continuing debates over casualties and accountability.
The Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry, established to investigate the incident, found that protesters were shot at, injured and killed. However, the Lagos State Government subsequently rejected key aspects of the panel’s findings, including parts of its conclusions on casualties.
The anniversary has repeatedly been marked by confrontations between security operatives and people seeking to commemorate the protests.
In October 2021, police fired tear gas during a memorial procession organised by youths and celebrities to honour victims of police brutality. The then Lagos Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, said officers were dispersing individuals he described as miscreants rather than participants in the procession.
In 2024, police again deployed tear gas to disperse protesters marking the fourth anniversary of the demonstrations. The protesters had demanded the full implementation of recommendations made by judicial panels established after the 2020 protests. Police said officers acted after the demonstrators refused to disperse.
Calls for Justice and Police Reforms Continue
Although the #EndSARS movement led to the disbandment of SARS in October 2020, demands for accountability, compensation for victims and comprehensive police reforms have continued.
Tuesday’s incident has renewed concerns about the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, particularly as Nigerians gathered to remember the protests and those affected by them.
