Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has paid tribute to the late Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, describing him as a man of humility, wisdom and kindness whose influence continued to shape government decisions until his death at the age of 100.
Aiyedatiwa made the remarks during a condolence visit to the residence of the late Yoruba elder statesman, according to a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, on Tuesday.
The governor said he was shocked by the news of Fasoranti’s death despite the deceased having reached the age of 100.
“Even at that age, Baba was still influencing decisions of government. That is to tell you that he was still mentally sound,” Aiyedatiwa said.
He described Fasoranti as an accomplished educator whose influence extended across generations, noting that many people he mentored had risen to prominence in different parts of the world.
The governor said the late Afenifere leader would be remembered for his humility, kindness, calm disposition and ability to develop and implement ideas.
Aiyedatiwa also described Fasoranti’s death as peaceful, saying he had not endured prolonged suffering associated with illness and frequent hospital visits.
“He slept, and that was it,” the governor said.
He prayed that those left behind would uphold the deceased’s virtues and contribute meaningfully to society.
Family Celebrates Fasoranti’s Legacy
The Secretary to the Ondo State Government, Dr Taiwo Fasoranti, who is the deceased’s son, said the family appreciated the governor’s visit and intended to celebrate their father’s life rather than mourn his death.
According to him, the late elder statesman often told family members that he had a covenant with God to depart when he reached the age of 100.
Taiwo said his father repeatedly instructed the family not to cry when he died.
“We are not mourning Baba. We are rejoicing. Baba has left us a big pair of shoes to step into, but we can only thank God for the legacy of firmness, resilience, hard work and love that he left us with,” he said.
He described his father as a devoted parent who remained actively involved in his children’s lives from elementary school through university.
The SSG added that the family would miss Fasoranti’s presence and wise counsel, describing him as a man of few words who communicated effectively without speaking much.
He appealed for prayers for the family as it adjusts to the loss and the responsibility of preserving the legacy left by their father.
Government Officials, Afenifere Chieftains Visit Family
Aiyedatiwa was accompanied on the condolence visit by Deputy Governor Olayide Adelami, Chief of Staff Segun Omojuwa, Head of Service Segun Odusanya and Abiola Mankinde, who represents Ondo East/Ondo West Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
Members of the Ondo State Executive Council also joined the delegation.
Others present included former Deputy Governor Abdulazeez Oluboyo, the Olu of Ilu Abo, Oba Olu Falae, and the Iresi of Osi, Oba Samuel Olajide Okunato.
Chairman of Akure South Local Government, Gbenga Fasua, and Afenifere chieftains Femi Aluko and Korede Duyile were also present.
Fasoranti, a prominent leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation Afenifere, died at the age of 100.
The condolence visit provided an opportunity for the governor, family members and associates to reflect on his contributions to education, public life and the Yoruba community.
