Police in Rivers State have launched an investigation into a deadly confrontation between community youths and men in military uniform over an oil spill in Kula, Akuku-Toru Local Government Area, with about 10 people feared dead.
The Rivers State Police Command confirmed that lives were lost after a boat reportedly capsized during the confrontation on Tuesday evening. However, the police said the exact number of casualties and the circumstances surrounding the incident were still being investigated.
According to a report by PUNCH, the dispute arose after community members attempted to stop a contractor’s operations over an oil spill allegedly linked to the activities of a businessman whose vessel was being used to execute a contract in the area.
The residents reportedly demanded that remediation work be carried out on the polluted environment and that compensation be paid for the damage caused by the spill before the contractor’s operations continued.
How the confrontation unfolded
The disagreement reportedly escalated when men in military uniform arrived in several gunboats and attempted to move the contractor’s vessel.
Community youths allegedly challenged the personnel, demanding an explanation for the vessel’s removal while their concerns about the pollution and compensation remained unresolved.
During the ensuing confrontation, one of the gunboats reportedly struck a boat carrying some of the youths, causing it to capsize.
About 10 people were feared dead, although authorities had yet to establish the official casualty figure as of Wednesday morning.
Community leader demands accountability
Chief Anabs Sara-Igbe, a community leader and pioneer spokeswoman for the Pan Niger Delta Forum, confirmed the incident to PUNCH on Tuesday night.
Sara-Igbe alleged that the arrival of the uniformed personnel worsened the situation and disrupted efforts to resolve the dispute peacefully.
He called on the police and other relevant security agencies to investigate the incident and establish what led to the deaths.
Providing a further update on Wednesday morning, the Niger Delta activist said the community intended to take the victims’ bodies to government and security authorities to demand accountability.
He said the bodies would be taken to Government House in Port Harcourt, as well as the police and Army headquarters in the state, to draw attention to the incident.
Sara-Igbe also alleged that the uniformed personnel left the scene after the boat capsized.
Army promises to make inquiries
When contacted by PUNCH, the spokesman for the Nigerian Army’s 6 Division in Port Harcourt, Lieutenant Colonel Umar, said the Army was not aware of the incident but promised to make inquiries.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State Police Command spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police Blessing Agabe, confirmed that the incident occurred in Kula Kingdom, Akuku-Toru Local Government Area.
Agabe said the police were investigating the reported loss of lives to determine the exact number of casualties and the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
The investigation is expected to clarify how the boat capsized and establish the circumstances that led to the reported deaths.
